Chapter Fourteen

“Where are you taking us?” Donnie asked.

“Fes,” Ruzar yelled over the engine.

“We need to get to the embassy in Rabat.”

“Yeah? The direct route is locked down. That’s where they’re expecting you to go. From Fes, we’ll head to Rabat, but via train.”

That wasn’t a bad idea, except it added at least a couple more hours’ worth of travel time. Plus, it meant that Donnie had zero control over contacts and equipment. That made his skin itch.

“Look, it’s only three hours to Fes,” Ruzar reasoned. “It’s a big city, and I have a friend with secure accommodation. We’ll stop for dinner, review our plans, and then decide on the best way forward. I think instead of pushing for the embassy you should head to Spain via boat. I have one available—a fancy yacht.”

Charlie spoke up for the first time since the market. “Ruzar, this is happening too quickly. We need to talk. I don’t know who you are, and this is all too confusing. Donnie and I need time to regroup.”

“You’ll get it. And you’re right—we do need to talk. Firefly, you’re safe. You need to trust me.”

Gritting teeth against the affectionate nickname, Donnie folded his arms and stared out at the passing countryside. He’d have cell phone signal in Fes which meant he could use the burner phone to update his teammates on location and status. He needed every ounce of Intel he could get — both on Ruzar and on the men hunting them.

Donnie focused on that, instead of the possible history between Charlie and Ruzar. What had happened on Malta and what had she been about to confess before the ambush? Had she slept with Ruzar and if so, why did it feel like a betrayal?

It wasn’t like she and Donnie were ever dating or had ever declared an interest in each other. Maybe Donnie should’ve reached out to Charlie in the States before she’d left for her trip. What did he think, that she wouldn’t date? That she’d just put her life on hold for a grumpy operator that barely acknowledged her?

He’d known in the beginning that she’d liked him. Before he’d humiliated her at the Jackson Hole music festival gig, Charlie would blush and shoot him the sweetest smiles. Jesus, the timing had sucked. He hadn’t been ready to date and hated the attraction he’d instantly felt for the red-haired vixen, and he’d shut her down so often that their friendship eventually turned bitter.

He guessed after the crappy eight years she’d had, that she’d just wanted a little fun, and Ruzar fit the bill. A holiday romance to sweep away the pain. But she’d been seduced by a wolf—a killer who marked her as prey.

Thinking about Ruzar’s greasy hands touching her made Donnie’s skin crawl. Although he could see the attraction, the dude looked like a male stripper. His long, thick hair added to the swagger and gave him an air of danger.

A small hand grasped his and Donnie looked over at Charlie’s pale face. She’d dozed on the drive, all due to an adrenaline crash.
